SD Teacher Certification Pathways
Table of Contents
Traditional Certification Route
The most common route to becoming a teacher in South Dakota is the traditional university pathway. Candidates must complete a state-approved teacher education program at an accredited college or university. This includes completing major coursework, undergoing a structured student teaching experience, and passing the required Praxis Content Knowledge exams. Upon graduation, candidates apply for an Initial Educator Certificate, which is valid for five years.
Certificate Renewal and Continuing Ed
To renew a professional educator certificate, teachers must earn continuing education credits during their five-year certification cycle. The SD DOE requires either 6 semester hours of college credit, 90 continuing education contact hours, or a combination of both. Renewals ensure that teachers stay current with instructional strategies, educational technology, and state standards. Renewal applications are managed online via the state's educator portal.
Out-of-State Reciprocity Rules
South Dakota welcomes teachers certified in other states. Under reciprocity agreements, candidates who hold a valid, unexpired teaching license from another state can obtain a comparable South Dakota certificate. Out-of-state applicants must submit official transcripts, copies of their current licenses, and proof of passing scores on content exams. In some cases, candidates may receive a one-year provisional certificate while completing state-specific requirements, such as the South Dakota Indian Education course.
Adding Subject Endorsements
Vested teachers can add subject endorsements to their existing certificates to teach different grade levels or content areas. Endorsements can be obtained by completing a set number of college credits in the subject area or by earning a passing score on the corresponding Praxis content exam. Adding endorsements increases flexibility and opens up new career opportunities within school districts.
Fingerprinting and Background Checks
Student safety is a top priority. All applicants for teacher certification in South Dakota must undergo a complete criminal background check, including fingerprinting. This check is conducted through the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Background clearances must be finalized before any provisional or professional certificate is issued.
